Hunter’s Top 10 Foodie Awards of 2023

#10 - Irish Breakfast at Mad Yolks

Dublin, Ireland

Starting off our list of the best food eaten during 2023 is the Irish Breakfast at Mad Yolks in Dublin, Ireland. It is a hearty plate of fried eggs, black and white puddings (sausages), tomatoes, toast, bacon, and mushrooms. It is very filling and flavourful!

#9 - Roasted Duck with Cabbage at Lokál Dlouhááá

Prague, Czech Republic

This is roasted duck that is slowly cooked in a hearty sauce served with a vinegar-based purple cabbage. The meat just falls off the bone and pairs nicely with the bread dumplings and potato dumplings. It’s very savoury but not too heavy.

#8 - Zapiekanka at Bar Namaxa

Krakow, Poland

This is basically a pizza on a French baguette. Super flavourful and very filling - it’s also extremely cheap too, and sharable as well. You can find it anywhere, but the best place we found was at Bar Namaxa. Not only does it taste good, but it’s fun to eat as well!

#7 - Yogurt with Candied Carrots at Karamanlidka

Athens, Greece

Usually served after a heavy meal, candied carrots with yogurt is typically a staple in Greek cooking (or, at least that’s what they told us). It may sound like a weird combination, but it’s super refreshing and tasty. The sweetness from the carrots paired with the tanginess from the yogurt works well together, and it makes it into my top 10 list, so it’s definitely that good.

#6 - Sour Potato Soup at Koliba Kamzík Zelená

Bratislava, Slovakia

While this is not considered a super traditional dish in Slovakia, it sounded good to me at the time we were ready for lunch, so I thought I’d try it. Wow, the flavours of the potato, cream, oils, chips and crunchy bits, and spices all worked well together… and it was beautifully presented. Definitely worth a try if you’re visiting Bratislava.

#5 - Sunday Roast at The Wenns Chop and Ale House

King’s Lynn, England

This is a HUGE portion of Sunday Roast (don’t let the photo fool you). There was something different in the flavours, quality of ingredients, the presentation, and overall taste of the roast. Since living in England and being around Cassie’s family, nothing really comes close to how good this roast is.

#4 - Sticky Toffee Pudding at Dean Street Townhouse

London, England

Life-changing. This pudding is a steamed sweet toffee cake that is drenched in toffee sauce and topped with vanilla ice cream. The best part: this place is consistent. Every time we go, it tastes incredible each time. It’s not just a fluke - Dean Street Townhouse has perfected sticky toffee pudding.

#3 -Svickova na Smetane (beef sirloin with cream and cranberries) at Hostinec U Sádlů

Prague, Czech Republic

This one may seem strange, but it works. It’s slowly cooked beef sirloin that is cooked with a cream sauce and then topped with cranberries and cream. It sounded interesting on the menu, so I decided to try it, and it was one of the best meals I had in Europe all throughout 2023. It was exceptional!

#2 - Kapustnica at the Christmas Market

Bratislava, Slovakia

Like in Cassie’s food list, this one is also up there for me. It doesn’t look super appetizing, but it is oh so good! It is a sauerkraut soup with paprika sausage, onions, and spices that is slowly cooked for hours. Something about the combination of ingredients just work. Don’t know why it was so good, by my gosh it was delicious.

#1 - Papanasi at Ceru Cu Bere

Bucharest, Romania

I CANNOT STOP TALKING ABOUT THE PAPANASI. It was out of this world! It’s like a yeast donut made from cottage cheese topped with a sweetened sour cream sauce, blueberry compote, and powdered sugar. It literally melts in your mouth. It is SOOOOOOOOO good. Words cannot describe it. Just try it….
